A school route mapping shows where pupils' experiences sit. You see exactly which routes they use and where the perceived problems recur – not only what they think in general.
Pupils themselves draw their route to and from school on a digital map. Along the way they can mark places they experience as dangerous or unsafe and answer short questions about why – combined with relevant background questions such as year group and mode of travel.

Safe school routes is a complete service for mapping pupils' routes to school and places they experience as dangerous or unsafe. Entergate helps the municipality through the entire project – from start-up and design of the mapping to collection, geographic analysis and delivery of several finished reports.
What is included in a Safe school routes project?
Project management, digital survey, geographic mapping, participant links, support, analysis and finished reports are included. The municipality gets a dedicated project manager from Entergate who is responsible for the project from start to delivery. Together we adapt the setup to the municipality and the schools. Entergate then sets up the mapping, develops relevant questions and participant flows, creates links or QR codes, supports delivery and compiles the results. After the project is completed, several reports are delivered with, for example, map analyses, tables and charts.
How do you map children's routes to school?
One way is to let the children themselves show how they get to school on a digital map. In Safe school routes, pupils draw their usual travel routes and mark places they experience as dangerous or unsafe. The map information is combined with short questions that give more context to the answers. When many pupils' answers are compiled, it is possible to see recurring travel routes, places and geographic patterns.
How do you identify traffic-hazardous or unsafe places at schools?
By collecting many pupils' map markings, it is possible to see which places recur in their experiences. When several pupils mark the same junction, crossing or stretch of road, a clearer geographic pattern emerges. The mapping can at the same time show which travel routes pass the place and what the pupils say creates the lack of safety. The result gives the municipality a basis for deciding which places need to be analysed or investigated further.
How much administrative work is required from the municipality?
Relatively little, because Entergate holds the entire project together. The municipality mainly contributes goals, school selection, contact persons and local knowledge. Entergate is responsible for project management, adaptation of the mapping, technical setup, participant flows, support during delivery, analysis and reporting.
How much time do the schools need to spend?
The pupils' part is designed to be simple and not time-consuming. They open a link or scan a QR code, answer short questions and mark their travel route and unsafe places on the map. The mapping is often carried out during, for example, tutor time, PE or another suitable lesson.
How does the municipality get pupils to take part?
The most common approach is that the mapping is carried out during school hours. When the teacher introduces the mapping during a lesson, participation becomes a natural part of the school day while pupils can get help if questions arise. Entergate can also produce instructions, images and other material that supports delivery.
Can we trust the results?
The mapping gives a systematic basis based on pupils' own experiences of the route to school. When many pupils take part, the municipality can identify recurring geographic patterns instead of relying only on individual views. The results show how pupils experience the traffic environment and should be used together with the municipality's other traffic data, GIS material, local knowledge and professional assessments.
Are pupils' answers anonymous?
Yes. Pupils' answers are collected anonymously and are not linked to the pupil's identity. The mapping is designed with regard to GDPR and the municipality's requirements for data protection and confidentiality.
What is the difference between Safe school routes and an ordinary survey?
Safe school routes combines ordinary survey questions with geographic mapping. That means the municipality can not only see what pupils answer, but also where travel routes and problem places are and how different answers relate geographically to one another. In addition, Safe school routes is a complete service where Entergate handles project management, delivery support, analysis and reporting.
What does the municipality get after the mapping?
The municipality gets several finished reports with maps, geographic analyses, tables, charts and compilations. Depending on the project setup, the reports can for example show common travel routes, frequently used areas, unsafe places, reasons behind experienced lack of safety and distance to school.
Does Entergate produce a finished action plan?
No. Entergate mainly delivers mapping, analysis and decision-making material. The municipality then uses the results together with other relevant material to prioritise and plan concrete traffic measures.
What can the municipality use the reports for?
The reports can be used as a basis for the municipality's continued road-safety and improvement work. They can for example help the municipality identify places that need to be studied more closely, compare needs between school areas, complement existing traffic data and create a shared basis between school, traffic planning and other affected operations.
How can children be involved in municipal traffic planning?
Through Safe school routes, children's own experiences can become a concrete basis in the planning work. Pupils show which routes they use and mark places they experience as dangerous or unsafe. Entergate then compiles the information in map analyses and reports that the municipality can use together with other planning material.
Can the municipality's GIS data be used in the mapping?
Yes. The map environment can be complemented with relevant geographic material from the municipality. It is for example possible to work with WMS layers and imported markers from GIS, which makes it possible to adapt the map to the municipality's geographic information.
Can several schools be included in the same project?
Yes. Safe school routes can be adapted to both smaller and larger projects with several schools. Setup, mapping and reporting are decided based on the municipality's size, schools and which questions the municipality wants to analyse.
Can the mapping be carried out on a recurring basis?
Yes. By carrying out mappings on several occasions, the municipality can compare the results and follow how pupils' travel routes and experiences change over time.
How is accessibility handled?
Forms and participant flows are accessibility-adapted according to WCAG 2.1 AA. The goal is to make the mapping as simple and usable as possible for the pupils who are to take part.
Where is the information stored?
Entergate's data is stored on servers in Sweden. Entergate's solutions are developed in Sweden and the service is designed for organisations with high requirements for security, privacy and data protection.
What does Safe school routes cost?
The price is based primarily on the municipality's size and how many schools are to be included in the project. During an initial review we go through the municipality's needs and the scope of the project. After that Entergate puts together a suitable setup and a price picture.
